Expanded Free School Meals

From September 2026, all children whose families receive Universal Credit will be entitled to free school meals, regardless of household income. This change applies to children attending eligible schools in England.

Children may also be eligible if their family receives certain other qualifying benefits. In addition, all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 continue to receive a free school meal through the Government's Universal Infant Free School Meals scheme.

We encourage all eligible families to register, as this may help the school access additional funding to support pupils' learning and wellbeing.

Pupil Premium and Free School Meals

Pupil Premium is additional government funding provided to schools to help improve outcomes for disadvantaged pupils. Children may be eligible if they are currently entitled to benefit-related free school meals, have been entitled to benefit-related free school meals at any point in the last six years, are looked after by a local authority, have previously been looked after, or are from a service family. Registering for free school meals not only provides eligible children with a free, nutritious school lunch each day, but can also help the school access extra funding to provide additional support, resources and opportunities that enhance children's learning and wellbeing.

If you think your child may be eligible for benefit-related free school meals and you receive one or more of the qualifying benefits listed below, please speak to a member of the school office staff and we will give you a form to complete. If you need any support completing the form, we are more than happy to help.

Income Support
income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
income-related Employment and Support Allowance
support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
the guaranteed element of Pension Credit
Child Tax Credit (provided you’re not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190)
Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
Universal Credit - if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get)
